Designing the perfect Craft Night was so much fun.

I was inspired by the bold black and white striped design of the  Zoës Kitchen Girls Night In Party Pack printables by The Tomkat Studio!

A few sheets of striped craft paper from Paper Source was perfect for creating envelope liners for my invitations!

RËVIEW: PARAMOUNT BIRMINGHAM

THE RESTAURANT: Trattoria  Centrale & El Barrio, popular downtown eateries, have just added another heavy hitter to the line up.  Paramount, rounds out the triad and brings the much needed after hour bites and entertainment to the cities center. The triple threat, Bar/Grill/Arcade, has taken root in the former Paramount Yogurt space on the corner of 20th and  2nd Ave North. Like the food stalker I am… I lurked on their Facebook page until the thing that mattered most to me was revealed… the menu!
THE PLOUGHMAN'S PLATTER
Andouille sausage, candied bacon, pimiento cheese, smoked trout dip, giardiniera, marinated olives & crackers

THE AMBIANCE & SERVICE:
Not shabby at all… the converted space gives you an upscale neighborhood bar feel without the dirt and grime nor pretentiousness. The most noticeable remnant of the previous tenants is the large wall photo offering  a nostalgic  view of the space. A large bar,  lined with backless stools and inset wheel rims, takes center stage. As a big fan of open air restaurants, I have to say I took note of the addition of garage doors. I can't wait for spring!

While  the grill is self seating, I was greeted by Paramount employee (Justin) after I walked through the door. The staff was attentive and very knowledgeable. There didn't appear to be any just opened "hiccups".
QUARTER POUND DOG
Perro Grande: bacon, avocado, pico de gallo, mayo & pickled jalapeños.

WINGS 2 WAYS:
Rosemary, lemon, percornio & barrio hot sauce,

THE MENU: We were informed of the Happy Hour Specials and some of the staff favorites from the creative menu. With several spins on the traditional, I was compelled to try an assortment of dishes. Wings 2 Ways, Triple Cooked Fries  and Not-zzarella Sticks. My sidekick foodie ordered The Ploughman's Platter &  one of  the Quarter Pound Dogs.

TRIPLE COOKED FRIES: with garlicky mayo

The food arrived quickly and we couldn't wait to dig in!  It's hard to name a favorite  but the  Not-zareela Sticks are a definite must try! The texture and flavor, combined with the house-made marinara, definitely brought bar food to another level! The Wings 2 Ways delivered as well. One of my wing peeves is a dry rub wing that has no flavor. I don't want to "look at flavor" I want to taste the flavor and that I did! The lemon, rosemary and percornio was not overpowering but was a nice addition to the marinated wings. I couldn't stop dunking the crispy fries into the garlic spiked mayo, best thing about good bar fries is that even when they get cold they still taste awesome! Need I say these were some good bar fries!

NOT-ZZARELLA STICKS:
risotto, broccoli, red pepper, olives, mozzarella & spicy marinara

With a decent portion size and a menu that packed variety and creativity it's nice to see the price point around the $7.00 mark. The Happy Hour Menu boasted wings and drink specials.

VERDICT:  A great spot for catching up with friends or just to mingle and people watch. With the pending opening of the adjoining game room, the possibilities are endless! While I didn't try out out any of the specialty drinks or partake in the selection of beers, the bar was well attended. With a few hometown brews on the menu, I'm sure there is something for everyone! I can't wait for my second trip to try out some of the other dishes on the menu! Paramount is a win in my book!

FOODIE: STRAWBERRY COMPOTE FRENCH TOAST

Trips to the market are always inspirational! With a carton of beautiful strawberries and a bundle of fresh mint, all with a refreshing beverage in mind, it became apparent this morning that something special should happen and my oh my did it!

FRENCH TOAST:SOURDOUGH.MILK.EGG.CREAM.SUGAR.CINNAMON.VANILLA

COMPOTE : SUGAR. STRAWBERRIES. LEMON. HEAVY CREAM

On medium heat add 1/3 cup of  Sugar to your saucepan with  3-5 sliced Strawberries
Combine 1 cup of Milk, 1 Egg and 2 tbsp of Heavy Cream with a sprinkle of cinnamon, a dash of sugar and a swig of vanilla. Whisk the ingredients together until combined. Submerge 1 piece of Sourdough Bread into the mixture. Make sure to flip the bread so that both sides are evenly coated.
Squeeze the Juice of Half a fresh Lemon into the Strawberry Compote. Stir and combine the Sugar, Lemon and Strawberries. Continue to stir as the Sugar melts and cooks with the juice from the Strawberries.
Heat 1 teaspoon of  olive oil over medium heat in a frying pan. Place a slice of french toast into the pan to brown on one side. Cook until brown and  slightly firm, flipping the slice over to cook evenly on both sides. Remove from the pan and repeat the submerge  and brown step with your other bread slices.
Optional: Take a clean spoon and sneak a taste of your compote. Heavenly, isn't it! Inspired by a Cream Saver I divided my compote in half. I added a couple of teaspoons of Heavy Cream to the half in my sauce pan and let the mixture continue to simmer. I stirred to combine and the results were a creamy, sweet Strawberry Compote!

GARNISH:  WHIPPED CREAM & FRESH MINT

Stack your French toast and layer with fresh slices of Strawberries. Chop some fresh mint for Garnish and pour your Strawberry Compote atop of your stack of French Toast! Add some fresh Whipped Cream and Enjoy!

THE REVIEW: SAWS SOUL KITCHEN

THE RESTAURANT:  I wrote my first review on SAWS back in 2011.  A couple of years have passed and the SAWS brand has added some new restaurants to their line up.  I found myself  in Avondale, making a decision between SAWS Soul Kitchen and the brands newest addition Post Office Pizza.  The Soul Kitchen won out.

 BBQ CHICKEN & GREENS

THE SERVICE & AMBIANCE:
A hole in the wall, barely big enough for the dinner rush crowd to turn around in, is probably an accurate description of the facility. It's the kind of place you go when you just want good food and not all the fluff of working restrooms and fancy tables and chairs.

Similar to the original SAWS, metal art work, license plates and other paraphernalia litter the walls. Look up and  SAWS t-shirts, skillfully hung with push pins, canvas the ceilings. There is no hostess  and the open prep area serves as great entertainment for the fast moving order line. The cashier was less than friendly but was efficient in keeping the line moving.

LIMITËD: COVËRED

The Coverëd collection won't be available for long!

FIELD TRIP: EARTH FARE

ROSEMARY TREES: Smelled Awesome and they are just so darn cute!

THE STORE: I’m ashamed to say that a visit to the store has been on my list of must do’s for the past year! While I was quick to sign up for their rewards program and salivate over and pass along their awesome deals, I just barely scratched it off  of my 2013 list!

FRESH CRANBERRIES: WIDE AISLES AND BRIGHT DISPLAYS

THE SERVICE & AMBIANCE:
The store was clean, open and inviting and although a little smaller, it was pretty comparable in design to its competitors. The staff was really friendly and engaging!

THE STOCK: The produce section offered a fresh selection but I wasn’t impressed with the variety. This trip was for my fathers’ favorite Hibiscus Tea, which we found just past the produce and next to the fresh ground coffee!

VERDICT: I’ll definitely be visiting the store again as I didn’t get a chance to check out the deli! I’m also on the hunt for a good butcher so I can’t wait to check out the Earth Fare selection!
